Newman’s car flips several times in the air, eventually catching fire, spinning onto the infield and crossing the finish line on its roof. No other drivers were injured in the crash.

Newman was rushed to a local hospital, but his current condition remains unclear.

Newman was trying to hold on to the lead when his car was nudged by Ryan Blaney and hit the wall on the final lap of the race.

Denny Hamlin ended up winning and Newman was credited with a fourth-place finish.

Balney, who finished second, said that he locked in behind Newman in a move of brand alliance for Ford. He said, “We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11… I was committed to just pushing him to the win and having a Ford win it and got the bumpers hooked up wrong. It looked bad.”

Hours later, NASCAR had some good news:  Ryan Newman was in serious condition, but “his injuries are not life threatening.”
