Communities across the state continue to see record numbers of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. With Thanksgiving just a few days away, the CDC and local public health experts with the One for All Missouri campaign are urging Missourians to do everything possible to protect themselves, stop the spread, and reduce the strain on our hospitals.
- About 1 in 100 Missourians have tested positive for COVID-19 in Missouri over the past two weeks.
- This high prevalence means it is now much more likely that you will come into contact with a contagious person in public or at an informal gathering.
- As much as possible, avoid close contact with people you do not live with.
- It is not too late to adapt your Thanksgiving traditions to protect yourself and your loved ones
- The more people you gather with, the more likely it is that someone in your gathering will have COVID-19 and spread it to others. Keep your loved ones safe by only celebrating with the people you live with. Connect with other loved ones by phone or video chat.
- Try coordinating menus or delivering food so that you can enjoy the same meal virtually.
- Modify your Black Friday shopping traditions to avoid large groups of people crowded together indoors. Take advantage of online deals and plan to do your in-person holiday shopping at less busy times so you can practice physical distancing in the stores.
- The best thing you can do is to take steps to prevent getting the virus in the first place:
- Wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth and stay home as much as possible.
- Limit your outings to only necessary trips.
- Use curbside pickup instead of shopping or eating indoors.
- Wash your hands frequently, with soap, for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Stay home if you or anyone in your home is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
- Hospitals are at or nearing capacity statewide. If possible, seek care elsewhere.
- If you are not sure if you should go to the hospital, call your doctor or 911.
- Take your medications as prescribed so you don’t need to be hospitalized.
- Be extremely careful. Accident victims could easily catch COVID while waiting for care in the hospital.
