6th ranked Illinois Springfield completes sweep of Panthers

OZARK, Mo.— Illinois Springfield’s high-powered offense continued to roll as they swept Drury in a doubleheader on Sunday at US Baseball Park in Ozark. The Prairie Stars took game one 7-1, then finished off the series with a 15-7 win in game two.

The Panthers fell to 9-19 and 9-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Illinois Springfield, ranked sixth in NCAA-II, improved to 25-3 and 21-3 in the league.

The Panthers lost the seven-inning first game 7-1. The Prairie Stars scored a run in the third, then two in the fourth. Drury pulled within two runs of the lead on a solo home run from Clayton Engel, but Illinois Springfield pulled away with two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Chad Saner (5-0) went five innings for the win, while Hunter Becker (1-4) took the loss for the Panthers.

Drury out hit Illinois Springfield 15-12 in the second game, but Prairie Stars took advantage of 16 walks and used a seven-run fourth inning to complete a four-game series sweep with a 15-7 win.

Jackson Dierenfeldt went 4 for 5 at the plate for Drury, and Clayton Engel drove in a pair of runs going 1 for 3. Prairie Stars second baseman Brandon Bannon went 4 for 5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Drury returns to action on Friday, April 30, when they open a four-game series at Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri.
