This Missouri Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (MOAAP) applauds the FDA and CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices approval of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12-15 years old. The vaccine development process was thorough and showed it was effective in preventing infection in teens.
“The announcement of 12-15 year olds eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine is great news for Missouri teens,” said Dr. Kristin Sohl, President-Missouri Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics. “I encourage all Missouri families to schedule their children for the vaccine as soon as possible.”
The research trial produced strong antibody responses and none of the participants experienced serious side effects. As with any vaccine, mild to moderate symptoms such as fever, fatigue and soreness of the injection site can be expected.
In Missouri, over 53,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in children. Even though we know children have been impacted at a lower rate than adults, we have seen the impacts of this virus on children. The best tool we have to protect children and ensure they are ready to participate in group activities is by receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
MOAAP is working with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and others across the state to ensure an equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine for children. If a child receives the vaccine from a pharmacy or school based clinic it is recommended to share this information with the child’s primary care physician to ensure a complete medical record.
“I recommended the vaccine to my family, as I know this is the best way to protect them from the impacts of COVID-19.” Dr. Sohl said. “This vaccine has the ability to help our children safely engage in all activities, including school and extracurriculars.”
As we wait for children under the age of 12 to be approved for the vaccine, it is important for parents and caregivers to ensure children are up-to-date on all childhood immunizations. Now is the time to ensure that children are protected to safely participate in summer activities and prepare for the new school year.
It is important that families with children not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine continue following the guidance on masking, physical distancing and group gatherings.
