WEST PLAINS, MO – Legal Services of Southern Missouri (LSSM) is a private, not-for-profit corporation, serving 43 counties in southern Missouri. With offices headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, and branch offices located in West Plains, Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, and Rolla, Missouri, LSSM combines public funding and the commitment of private attorneys to assure that low-income families have access to legal representation in civil matters.
Each office screens applications for assistance and provides legal services to clients. Cases will be handled by either a staff attorney or a private attorney supporting LSSM’s mission and work. The staff also provides outreach, community education, coordinates work with other local agencies and groups and generally administers the program. LSSM’s practice focuses on family law matters including dissolution of marriage; bankruptcy (limited situations) and debtor relief; tenant rights; public housing rights; consumer rights including utilities; health care rights; health care issues such as Medicare and Medicaid; income maintenance (TANF, general relief, food stamps, SSI, unemployment compensation, utility assistance, alleged overpayment on any benefit); education rights; paternity, adoptions and name changes; visitation rights; minor/adult guardianships; simple estate planning and health care directives.
