State Rep. Travis Smith Capitol Report for August 8, 2021

August 8, 2021 – I’ve been in Salt Lake City this week at the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) annual meeting.  It’s an opportunity to talk with other state legislatures from across the country on policies that work in improving life for their constituents.

I served on the Task Force for Health and Human Services, Expansion of Broadband in rural America, Education with an emphasis in Work Force Development and Economic Development. There were some really excellent speakers and there is a great deal of ideas I wish to take home and share with constituents in the District.

One of the closing speakers was former governor of Texas, Rick Perry. He had a positive message about treating political colleagues with respect and listening to points of view even when they are contrary to one’s personal beliefs. As a former coach it really made sense to me. Both sides want to always win but when the game is over it’s time to shake hands and say, “Good game.” Be humble in victory and learn from mistakes when you lose. Please know that doesn’t mean I’m content in defeat. In fact, I hate losing and will work to win for my team, my constituents every time. But in those times of defeat I promise to shake the dust off and get ready for the next challenge. Thank you for electing me to serve you in Jefferson City. It takes all of us to make a winning team.
