As part of the Biden-Harris administration’s American Rescue Plan, the National Health Services Corporation (NHSC) received additional funding that they are directing toward a new Loan Repayment Program for students in the medical field to serve in underserved communities, no doubt affecting many students that have come out of our area, but also potentially the area itself. Below is an excerpt of information we have received on this plan as they reached out to us:
The NHSC has received a huge influx of money through the Biden-Harris administration’s American Rescue Plan.
This funding is going to go to new Doctors and Nurses that are applying to the NHSC to receive awards. The awards are tuition repayment in exchange for committing to work for the government for a certain number of years in various low in-come, rural, and tribal communities that have typically been underserved with healthcare.
There are various stages of loan repayment that exist based on the kind of commitment that the new health care person is committing to:
- If you commit to 2 years of primary care, medical, dental, or behavioral health, you can get $50,000 in tuition reimbursement.
- If you commit to 3 years of opioid crisis in rural communities, you could be awarded $100,000!
Because there is a shortage of doctors and nurses, the NHSC believes these awards can help to ease that shortage by taking the financial burden away from people who are willing to go into this type of work.
