Today is the big day of the big drop in temperature across the Ozarks, and the sharp dip could lead to dangerous conditions on the roadway. While ice will likely form as this drop happens, the biggest thing to watch for is black ice on the roadway. Black ice can quickly develop on infrastructure such as bridges and overpasses, and its color could mean that you don’t notice it until your tires are already on it.
If you find yourself needing to get onto the roadways today, make sure that you follow a few steps to help ensure your safety:
Leave early for your trip. This is to ensure you can travel slowly and more carefully in your trip. Driving in haste could lead to an accident, even without the winter weather conditions.
Do NOT use your cruise control. While it is a useful tool to use on the highways, if you begin to slip on the road cruise control will keep your tires moving, which could lead to further loss of control of the vehicle.
Pack an emergency kit in your vehicle. In the case of an unfortunate accident, you should keep an emergency kit in your car, complete with first aid equipment and heating tools such as blankets and heating pads. You never know if you’ll end up stranded.
Above all, keep a conservative outlook on the situation. If you feel some doubt as to your safety when embarking on the road, err on the side of caution and stay home.
