WEST PLAINS, MO: Ms. Sherri Jolliff, West Plains, MO, Daughter of Ozark Spring, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (Ozark Spring, NSDAR) won first place at the state level (MSSDAR) in the American Heritage Committee Contest with her Flag Afghan. Her inspiration was American history and our patriots’ sacrifice in the American Revolution. When Ms. Evelyn Vetter, American Heritage Committee Chair and Ozark Spring, NSDAR Daughter, viewed the completed work, she felt it worthy of submission to the 2021-2022 NSDAR American Heritage Committee Contest, Fiber Arts Category, Crochet Division. The contest theme, “Rise and Shine Your Light on Our House Beautiful, ” highlights the recent renovations to the National Society DAR Headquarters Buildings in Washington, D.C.
Sherri said, “The afghan was originally intended to be a lap robe, but she got carried away.” She further explained that the afghan “represents the American flag to symbolize the patriotism of NSDAR. While facing a rigid deadline, she decided to limit the flag to 13 stars representing the original United States Colonies.” Also, she suggested that “in keeping with early design traditions before an Act of Congress that Americans now recognize as Flag Day, her afghan is made freehand without a pattern. It has 13 white stars that encircle the oblong blue canton and 13 stripes alternating red and white. Stitches are half-double and single-crochet with contrasting textures. The stars were crocheted circularly in single, double, and triple crochet stitches.”
Ms. Jolliff went on to say that she “is humbled and honored that her fellow Ozark Spring, NSDAR Daughters, “felt the project was worthy of the recognition it has received” and “credits her talent as one that was handed down to her from her grandmother at an early age nearly 50 years ago.”
The Flag Afghan has been donated by the Ozark Spring, NSDAR to the upcoming 35th Annual Cystic Fibrosis Concert and Auction, Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 7:00 p.m., at the West Plains Civic Center. The concert headlines Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry.
