Grizzly eSports secure playoff births

WEST PLAINS, Mo. –  The Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly eSports program has a 27-26 record through six weeks of action during the NJCAAE’s spring season, and three teams have secured their spot in the playoffs.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) roster remains the lone undefeated team for Grizzly eSports and is expecting a high seed when playoffs begin April 14.

Week Five Action

 

In week five action, the Call of Duty: MW2 4 vs. 4 roster continued its winning ways with a 3-0 sweep against Western Technical College in LaCross, Wisconsin. In Hardpoint in round one, the Grizzlies started in a dominant fashion by winning 250-0. In round two, the teams competed in Search and Destroy where they won 6-1. The Grizzlies capped off the sweep in Control by winning 3-0.

For the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitors, Summer Gabriel, West Plains, and Julian Proctor, Roach, were swept 3-0 by Garden City Community College, Garden City, Kansas. Zahren Whited, West Plains, picked up a win over Garden City by a competitive ruling.

In Hearthstone, Jessica Belcher, West Plains, dropped her match against Northwest College, Powell, Wyoming, 3-1.

In a thrilling match against local rival Mineral Area College, Park Hills, the Warzone roster managed to sweep its invitational opponents, which included a season high record of 19 eliminations in a single match by Brock DeWeese, West Plains, and Spencer Spreutels, Koshkonong.

In Mario Kart action, Dustin Johnson, Ava swept his opponents from Connors State College, Warner, Oklahoma, 4-0, while teammate Abe Khan, West Plains, was on the wrong end of a sweep against his opponents from Connors State.

The Grizzly Overwatch squad found success against Jefferson College with a 3-0 sweep, securing a spot in the upcoming playoffs.

Week Six Action

 

Another week, and another sweep for the Call of Duty: MW2 Grizzlies as they faced off against Navarro College, Corsicana, Texas. During round one of Hardpoint, the Grizzlies won 250-86. In round two in Search and Destroy, the Grizzlies won 6-1 before taking a 3-1 victory in round three during Control. This roster sports a 6-0 record so far this season.

In Hearthstone, Belcher lost on a competitive ruling against Hocking College, Nelsonville, Ohio.

In Warzone, DeWeese and Spreutels took a 2-0 sweep victory against Pratt Community College in Kansas, finishing the final game 16-0.

It was a tough week of Mario Kart action. Khan dropped a 4-1 match against the Southwestern Oregon Community College Lakers, Coos Bay, and Dustin Johnson lost 4-0 against defending national champion Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College. This sets up Johnson in a must-win match on March 30 as his playoff hopes are on the line.

The Overwatch team had a tough task this week facing the only remaining undefeated team left, Northeast State Community College, Blountville, Tennessee. This game went all five rounds before the Grizzlies suffered defeat by a total point count of 6-5.
