COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri cornerbacks coach Al Pogue added the title of assistant head coach, Head Coach Eliah Drinkwitz announced.
Pogue is in his second year with the program and will continue to serve as the cornerbacks coach. The veteran coach enters his 13th season at the collegiate level and sixth season in the SEC. Pogue also coached 13 years at the high school level, including seven as a head coach at three different Alabama high schools.
“Coach Pogue has that mix of veteran coaching experience in this league, coupled with tremendous energy and strong connection with our players,” said Drinkwitz. “This role as assistant head coach will help assist me with our overall program vision and organization. I know he’ll attack these responsibilities with true enthusiasm and passion for Mizzou football.”
In 2022, Mizzou’s cornerback room played a significant role in a much-improved defense. Kris Abrams-Draine and Ennis Rakestraw, Jr. combined for 75 tackles, 25 pass breakups, and 4.5 tackles-for-loss. Abrams-Draine and Rakestraw each defended 13 passes, something only two other defensive-back pairings accomplished nationwide.
Pogue joined the Mizzou staff in February 2022 following stints at Troy (2014-2018, 2021), Auburn (2011-2013, 2020) and West Virginia (2019). During his career, he’s coached six NFL draft picks and has been part of a BCS National Championship game staff.
Mizzou will open the 2023 season on Thursday, August 31, against South Dakota at Memorial Stadium.
