Oscar Wayne Greenwood, known to his friends as “Wayne,” was born to Oscar and Reva Downing Greenwood on January 21, 1938 in Willow Springs, Missouri. After a short battle with leukemia, he passed away at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
At the age of twelve, Wayne accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Willow Springs where he had perfect attendance in Sunday School throughout his youth. Since moving to Manhattan, he has been a member of College Heights Baptist Church.
Wayne graduated from Willow Springs High School with the Class of ’56 and went on to graduate from Walnut Ridge Baptist Junior College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, then completed his education at Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. During his lifetime, Wayne enjoyed many different endeavors. He farmed with his dad, taught junior high history and coached in Eldorado Springs, Missouri for 16 years, was a business owner for several years, and worked at Bass Pro until retirement.
On June 1, 1975, Wayne married Vickie Armstrong in Salem, Missouri. They have one son, Matthew Greenwood. He and his wife, Marlo, have five children – Kathryn, Cole, Luke, Reese, and Emerson. Wayne is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Cooper of Nixa, Missouri, and his nephew, Todd (Patty) Cooper of Ozark, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen Harrington of San Francisco, California.
Wayne’s interests included history, sports, hunting, fishing, and all things farm-related. He spent hours taking Matt and his horses to horse shows and has recently enjoyed seeing his grandchildren show horses. He loved being around cattle. He liked going to the sale barn each week and listening to the auctioneer, and he could tell you the price of cattle on any given day. As a former coach, he got a huge kick out of watching his grandchildren participate in sports. He was their biggest fan. Wayne’s greatest joy came from being with his family. He was a constant source of encouragement, strength, and support to them, and he will be missed terribly.
A visitation for Wayne will be held Friday, October 13, 2023, from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the Willow Funeral Home, LLC with a graveside service immediately following at the Willow Springs City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Willow Funeral Home, LLC.
