WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) Grizzly Softball team split their double header Saturday, Oct. 7, with Arkansas State University-Newport at the Hilburn Sports Complex in West Plains.
The Grizzlies won the opener 10-0 but dropped the nightcap 6-14.
The Grizzlies fall exhibition season record now stands at 8-6-1.
The opener
Grizzly Softball Head Coach Don Long said the team played well in every aspect of the game.
Freshman infielder Zoey Williams led the offensive charge going 2-3 at the plate with a single and a home run. She also recorded three RBIs and scored two runs. Freshman pitcher Brooklyn Hasler, Ozark, followed going 2-3 at the plate with two singles, and RBI and two runs.
Freshman pitcher Jordyn Foley, also of Ozark, hit a double in three at bats which knocked in two RBIs. She also scored one run. Freshman infielder Alexis Funkhouser, Sullivan, hit a single in three at bats which knocked in one run.
Foley pitched all five innings of the contest, allowing only two hits while fanning six batters and picking up the shutout.
The nightcap
Defensive woes plagued the Grizzlies in the second game, as they allowed several earned runs in the five-inning contest.
Freshman outfielder Karissa Roberts, Ozark, went 2-2 at the plate with two singles and two RBIs. Freshman infielder Sidney Myler, Carrollton, hit one double in her two at bats, knocking in one run. Hasler also went 1-2 at the plate with a single and an RBI.
Hasler started for the Grizzlies on the mound. In two and one-third innings, she allowed eight hits and one earned run. Freshman pitcher Kennedy Cogdill, East Prairie, finished out the game, allowing three hits and two earned runs.
Next up
The Grizzlies will travel to Batesville, Arkansas, Saturday, Oct. 14 to play two games at Lyon Field. They will face the hosting Lyon College Fighting Scots at 1 p.m., then take on the Arkansas State University-Newport Aviators in a rematch at 3 p.m.
