Salem, MO. – The Missouri Department of Conservation is currently seeking information involving the shooting of the national bird, a bald eagle.
The MDC took to social media on Friday with a few details about this case. It’s said that on January 18th, the bald eagle was found south of Salem. It was located at the base of a tree in a pasture, just on the south side of Route K and west of Route Z and Dent County Road 6180 at 11 a.m.
Investigators say the death was caused by a gunshot wound from a rifle, and a resident in the area had reported hearing a gunshot earlier that morning.
The bald eagle is protected under federal law. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment.
