Cardinals and Royals avoid arbitration with several players

The St. Louis Cardinals locked down their All-Star closer before yesterday’s arbitration deadline. The club agreed to an eight-point-two million dollar deal for the 2025 season with Ryan Helsley before the noon deadline. Helsley made his second All-Star team last year and led the National League with 49 saves. He also went 7-and-4 with a 2.04 ERA in 65 appearances. The team also agreed to terms with relievers JoJo Romero and John King, but they could not sign Brendan Donovan, Andre Pallante, or Lars Nootbaar.

The Royals signed Kris Bubic, Carlos Hernández, John Schreiber, Hunter Harvey, Kyle Isbel and MJ Melendez to one-year deals for the 2026 season. Right-hander Kyle Wright already agreed to a one-year, $1.8 million deal last month.
