Dose of Goodness: Watch The Transformation of Samuel – The Story Of A Dog Rescued After 8 Months On The Streets

Missouri – For eight long months, a lone dog struggled to survive in the Norwood area, eluding every attempt to bring him to safety. He lived off scraps from a truck stop, darting away from humans, too fearful to trust a helping hand. But the team at Ozarks Pet Rescue (OPR) never gave up.

After countless efforts using live traps, food, and patient coaxing, OPR volunteers, with support from the community, finally rescued ‘Larry’ on October 13, 2024. It took a tranquilizer gun, the dedication of fosters, and the compassion of Williams Veterinary Care, along with off-duty ACO Jordan from Mountain Grove Animal Control, to bring Larry to safety at last.

A Second Chance for Larry

For months, Larry endured life on the streets, his body weak from malnutrition and neglect. When he arrived at Williams Veterinary Clinic, his condition was heartbreaking. Larry tested positive for Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease, and whipworms. Bloodwork showed elevated liver enzymes and an increased CBC count, signs of his prolonged struggle for survival. Underneath matted fur and months of filth, Larry was revealed to be a three-year-old Poodle mix, weighing just 19 pounds after his first shave.

From Fear to Family

After two weeks of decompression and healing, Larry began his journey of trust and training with his fosters and OPR trainers. Over time, the once terrified and skittish dog learned what it meant to be loved, safe, and cared for.

And then, something amazing happened—his foster family couldn’t let him go.

Now, Larry is Samuel—a cherished member of his forever family. He has two sisters, a dog and a cat, and enjoys indoor living, human touch, and the warmth of belonging. Once afraid to let anyone near him, Samuel now plays, snuggles, and even had his very first trip to the groomer last week.

Ozarks Pet Rescue shared in a heartfelt post:

“Samuel is very happy in his new home, and our hearts melt every time we get updates on him! This is a dog who went from impossible to catch to a beloved family pet. Saving him was a team effort—volunteers, the community, fosters, Williams Veterinary Care, and an off-duty ACO all played a role in giving him this chance at life.”

Why Rescues Matter

Samuel’s story is one of hope, but thousands of animals never get that chance. Rescues like Ozarks Pet Rescue work tirelessly to save abandoned, neglected, and stray animals, giving them the love and care they deserve.

The Reality: According to the ASPCA, 6.3 million animals enter shelters and rescues across the U.S. every year. Sadly, 920,000 are euthanized due to overcrowding. While 4.1 million find new homes, too many of them end up back in shelters within a year.

But you can help change that. How You Can Make a Difference:
 – Adopt – If you have the space, time, and resources, consider giving a pet a second chance.
 – Foster – A temporary home can be the bridge to an animal’s forever family.
 – Donate – Not everyone can adopt, but every dollar helps rescues save more lives.
 – Volunteer – Your time is just as valuable as money. Help with events, care, or outreach.
 – Share – Spreading the word about adoptable pets helps connect them to loving homes.

Samuel’s story proves that hope is never lost—sometimes, it just takes a little patience, a lot of love, and a community willing to step up. Be the reason more animals like Samuel get their happy ending. Contact your local rescue today and be part of the change.
