The award was presented April 30 by university officials during a ceremony at Missouri State University in Springfield. The annual award recognizes outstanding educators from Missouri’s public colleges and universities. It celebrates faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, student advising, service to their institutions and a commitment to academic success.

“It comes as no surprise to me that Joanna received this award. I have had the privilege of knowing her for many years as both a nurse and an educator, and she truly demonstrates excellence in all that she does. Joanna has a remarkable ability to achieve at a high level while also uplifting her students and colleagues, inspiring them to grow and reach their full potential,” said MSU-WP Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Lisa Wade.

Patillo was selected by a committee of her peers based on input from students and faculty.

“Mrs. Patillo is more than an outstanding instructor—she is an inspiration and role model whose influence will stay with her students long after they leave the classroom,” said MSU-WP Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dr. Michael Orf. “Mrs. Patillo strives during every lecture to ensure nursing students fully understand the information and feel comfortable in their practice. Mrs. Patillo has a bright personality that makes every student feel seen, heard and cared for.”

Beyond the classroom, Patillo leads a study abroad program, taking students to Jamaica where they visit clinics and different home settings to take care of individuals who need healthcare.

“Joanna exemplifies what it means to be both and educator and leader. Her passion for nursing shines through in the way she mentors students and prepares them to be compassionate caregivers,” said MSU-WP Chancellor Zora Mulligan.
