Major Changes Coming to SNAP in Arkansas July 1st

Arkansas SNAP recipients will see significant changes soon under a new federal nutrition waiver set to take effect July 1, 2026. According to state officials, the waiver will prohibit the purchase of certain items—including soda, candy, and other unhealthy beverages—using SNAP benefits.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services says the change is part of an effort to encourage healthier food choices among SNAP households. While staple groceries and eligible food items will continue to be covered, products classified as nutritionally poor will no longer qualify.

The update applies to all SNAP transactions statewide. Additional guidance, including a full list of restricted items and program details, is available through the state’s SNAP information portal at ar.gov/SNAP.
