The American Veterinary Medical Association is reminding pet owners to take extra precautions as Fourth of July celebrations get underway. According to the association, fireworks, crowds and holiday foods can be frightening or even dangerous for animals, often causing pets to run away, become ill or encounter hazardous debris left behind after celebrations.
The AVMA recommends preparing ahead by ensuring pets have updated identification tags and microchips, securing yards and fences, and consulting a veterinarian if an animal has a history of anxiety during fireworks. During holiday events, officials advise keeping pets at home in a safe, escape‑proof area, avoiding table scraps, keeping them away from grills and fireworks, and watching for signs of overheating. They also stress never leaving pets in vehicles during warm weather.
After celebrations, owners should check yards and pastures for leftover fireworks or food debris that could harm pets or livestock. The AVMA says these steps can help keep animals safe throughout the holiday weekend.
