The Howell County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers impersonating the agency and spoofing its official phone number. Victims report receiving calls claiming they have an active warrant, missed jury duty, or failed to appear in court, followed by pressure to make an immediate payment while staying on the line.
Deputies say the Sheriff’s Office will never demand instant payment, threaten arrest for hanging up, or accept money through cryptocurrency kiosks, gift cards, or electronic payment apps. Scammers may also send fake court documents that appear official.
Officials urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up, avoid giving personal or financial information, and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using a trusted number. Those who believe they’ve been targeted or have already sent money are asked to report it immediately.
