Alton, MO. – Oregon County Associate Commissioner Jake Parker has issued a public statement regarding Oregon County receiving backpay for the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) fund. Read below for the official statement.
It has been some time since I’ve provided an update on our ongoing work with the United States Forest Service, and I want to share several important developments that directly benefit Oregon County. As many of you know, our county contains 106,000 acres of forestry ground. Over the past year, we have been pushing for increased SRS (Secure Rural Schools) funding to support our local schools. I’m pleased to report that the Forest Service has back‑paid our schools for the funding previously lost, and they have increased SRS funding moving forward. This is significant progress for our students, teachers, and communities.
A meeting was held today regarding public access to our rivers. The Forest Service will be implementing changes to improve accessibility for Oregon County citizens.
This includes: Streambank stabilization to repair roads near river access points restoring boat access at multiple locations. Improvements that will support both public recreation and our Sheriff’s Department during search‑and‑rescue operations. I’m confident we will begin seeing changes as soon as engineering work is completed.
We are also exploring a stewardship program with the Forest Service. Under this program, all profits from timber sales within the county, would be reinvested directly into Oregon County roads and special projects. We are in the early stages, but this could become a major benefit for our Road Department and the citizens we serve.
I would also like to thank Congressman Jason Smith’s office & David stubblefield for their positive help and support on these matters. Their engagement has been instrumental in moving several of these efforts forward for Oregon County.Thank you for your continued support as we work to strengthen Oregon County’s infrastructure, schools, and public access.
Jake Parker
District Two Associate Commissioner
