James A. Baker

James A. Baker of Couch, Missouri, was born on June 4, 1940, in Marion, Illinois, and passed away peacefully at his home on August 16, 2026, at the age of 86.

James is survived by his loving wife, Adelheid Schneider, whom he married on April 3, 1964. He is also survived by his daughters, Barbara Baker of Pacific and Carol Reynolds (Dennis Bridges) of Couch; grandchildren, BJ Reynolds (Amber) and Jamie Sisco (A.J.), both of Alton; and great-grandchildren, Preston Reynolds, Kassidy Reynolds, Korey Reynolds, Emily Sisco, and Brantley Sisco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred C. Baker and Opal Stewart; brothers, Calvin Baker and John Baker; sister, Jackie Diamond; grandson, Jason Reynolds; and son-in-law, Richard Reynolds.

James proudly served his country in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army. Following his military service, he worked for Verizon Telephone Company in Thayer, Missouri, where he later retired.

James loved the simple things in life. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed following his favorite team. He also had a deep love for farming and cherished the time he spent working on the farm and being outdoors. Above all, James treasured his family and especially loved spending time with them. He adored his great-grandchildren and took great joy in watching them grow and making memories with them.

James especially enjoyed spending time with his beloved Border Collie, Peppy, who was a cherished companion and brought him great joy. Peppy held a special place in his heart and was a faithful companion who brought him many happy moments.

James will be remembered for his service to his country, his love of farming, his loyalty to the Cardinals, and, most importantly, his love and devotion to his family. The memories he created with his family, especially his great-grandchildren, will be treasured for generations to come. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Cremation services will take place under the direction of The Clary Funeral Home, Alton, Missouri.
