Jeff Gordon proved he’s still got it, sweeping both IROC races over the weekend on the 1.7-mile street course around the National Mall in Washington, D.C., ahead of the inaugural Freedom 250 IndyCar race.
The NASCAR legend retired from full-time Cup racing in 2015 and now serves as vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports. Gordon previously raced in IROC during the height of his NASCAR career, making the victory a full-circle moment.
Gordon called it “a real honor” to race in Washington as the country celebrates its 250th anniversary, saying, “The fans are everywhere celebrating 250 years of this great country.”
He also paid tribute to the Busch family following Kyle Busch’s death, carrying a memorial sticker on his car, and said it was special getting to race longtime rival Kurt Busch again.
Afterward, Gordon said, “I’m truly blessed, and I think all of us are super appreciative to be here and to experience a weekend like this.”
