According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Howell County Associate Court, West Plains Police says James Thomas Beckring took a black 2008 Honda Pilot belonging to his partner and used it in a dangerous and aggressive manner. The victim and a witness told police Beckring accelerated rapidly and swerved the SUV toward them as if attempting to strike them. Records show Beckring is not listed on the vehicle’s title or registration.
Police say the victim later received a call from Beckring, who refused to return the vehicle and claimed he would leave it at a family member’s home more than 140 miles away. Officers recovered the SUV that night at 11:17 p.m., with Beckring as the sole occupant. During a post‑Miranda interview, he denied stealing the vehicle. The victim told investigators they wished to pursue charges.
He is charged with 1st degree tampering with a motor vehicle and 3rd degree assault, bond is set at $10,000.
