Douglas County Sheriff warns of virus sent through local emails

Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase issued a warning this past Thursday, Oct. 1, about suspicious emails reportedly being sent from local email addresses.

According to Degase, the emails may contain malicious software that could allow someone to gain access to a victim’s computer and personal information.

Windows users who have opened a suspicious email are encouraged to check the Task Manager on their computer for unfamiliar programs or services, including those identified as “ScreenConnect” or “Phone Link.” Degase advised anyone who finds an unfamiliar program running to shut down the computer immediately.

Mac users who receive one of the suspicious emails should delete the email and any associated files or downloads without opening them. Anyone who has already opened or installed a suspicious attachment or program should seek technical assistance rather than assuming deletion alone has removed the threat.

Those who need assistance checking their computer may contact PC Express at 417-683-2022.

Degase urged residents to use caution when opening unexpected emails, even when the message appears to come from someone they know locally.
