Chiefs-Chargers preview

The Kansas City Chiefs return from their bye week looking to keep their unbeaten start to the season going when they host the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City is 4-and-0 after opening the season with wins over Denver, Indianapolis, Miami and Las Vegas. The Chiefs survived a 30-27 road victory over the Raiders in their last game, with Patrick Mahomes leading an offense that has averaged nearly 30 points per game. Kansas City will try to maintain its early lead in the AFC West with another win over a division rival.

The Chargers come to Kansas City looking for answers after a difficult start to the season. Los Angeles is 0-and-5 following a 23-17 loss to Denver on Sunday, its fifth consecutive defeat. Quarterback Justin Herbert has thrown for 937 yards and 5 touchdowns, but 7 interceptions have contributed to the team’s struggles. The Chargers have averaged just 16.8 points per game, ranking near the bottom of the NFL in scoring. Los Angeles needs a more productive offensive performance and fewer costly mistakes to have a chance to pull off the upset.

Mahomes and the Kansas City offense will look to take advantage of a Chargers team that has struggled to get wins, but this is a rivalry that has produced plenty of close games. Los Angeles won the last two regular-season meetings between the teams, including a 16-13 victory at Arrowhead late last season. The Chiefs will try to use their home-field advantage and offensive production to avoid another setback against their AFC West opponent. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. Sunday, with television coverage on CBS.
