MSHP Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrests in Douglas County

Three people were arrested Saturday evening in Douglas County after a traffic stop on Missouri 5 led troopers to seize methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to probable cause statements filed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the stop occurred around 7:24 p.m. on Route Y when a black pickup with no registration was pulled over. During the stop, officers reported hearing glass hit the pavement and saw a meth pipe fall from the vehicle.

A search of the truck uncovered 4 grams of methamphetamine in a passenger’s purse and 27 grams hidden inside the trailer hitch. All three occupants were arrested in separate cases:

  • Melissa Loraine Hulse was charged with trafficking drugs in the second degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Troopers say she admitted the driver handed her meth during the stop. “A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed 4 grams of Methamphetamine in Hulse’s purse,” the statement reads.
  • Garrett Scott Brewer, the driver, was charged with trafficking drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle without a valid license, failure to display valid plates, and illegal window tint. Brewer reportedly told troopers he had not obtained a license since being released from prison. The report notes, “Brewer stated that he did not have a driver’s license… he told me that he had not gotten one since he got out of prison.”
  • Richard Larry Martin was charged with trafficking drugs and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia after troopers found a syringe in pants he claimed as his and methamphetamine in the vehicle.

They were all three taken to the Douglas County Jail.
