Attorney General Bailey Hauls China to Court for Unleashing COVID-19 on the World

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Missouri becomes the first state in the nation to take China to court for its role in the COVID-19 pandemic, as Attorney General Bailey prepares to face off at trial next week.

“We’re hauling China into court to hold them accountable for unleashing COVID-19 on the world,” said Attorney General Bailey. “Missouri v. China is truly a landmark case, as we seek $25 billion in damages. We won a key victory in this case last year, so we’re feeling confident heading into trial.”

Missouri sued China in 2020, specifically for thwarting the production, purchasing, and import and export of medical equipment, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), used in COVID-19 efforts. Attorney General Bailey is demanding $25 billion in remedies. To date, China has refused to appear in court despite being served, making a default judgment in Missouri’s favor likely.
