On October 15, 2026, at 1700 hours, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a female south of Ava in reference to a male subject later identified as Larry Sullivan, age 78, of Ava, who had fired a handgun inside their residence. The female barricaded herself in a back room. The female advised Sullivan had exited the residence with a rifle and went into the woods.
Deputies were able to make contact with Sullivan via cellphone and talk him into coming out of the woods and turning himself in. As Sullivan was being placed in the patrol vehicle, Sullivan laid down in the seat and kicked Deputy Three Eagles in the face. At this time, Sullivan was removed from the vehicle, where he continued to resist arrest, resulting in a minor injury to another Deputy.
Sullivan was transported to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and placed on a 24hr hold pending formal charges. Sullivan’ s injuries were treated by an ambulance upon arrival at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
A warrant was obtained for Sullivan for the following criminal charges:
Assault 1st degree, special victim; Assault 2nd degree, special victim; unlawful use of a weapon; resisting and interfering with felony arrest; and tampering with physical evidence.
No bond was set in the case.
Sheriff Degase commends the actions of his deputies. “ Calls involving firearms in domestic situations are some of the most dangerous calls we take as officers. We were fortunate that the injuries to the Deputies and Sullivan were minor in nature.”
