On July 18, 2026, shortly after midnight, Deputy Shane Harden was dispatched to CR 443 in western Douglas County in response to reports of a white vehicle involved in shooting. Deputy Harden located the vehicle at a residence and identified the suspect as Michael Coffer, an 18-year-old from Ava. Sergeant Aaron Box assisted with the investigation. The victims discovered a bullet hole above a bedroom window, and the bullet was later found inside the bedroom.
A warrant was issued for Coffer, charging him with five counts of Assault in the First Degree, five counts of Armed Criminal Action, four counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon for shooting at a motor vehicle, person, or building, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree. No bond was set in this case.
Sheriff Degase praised the efforts of Sergeant Box and Deputy Harden and expressed gratitude to the observant citizens who assisted with the case.
