COVID-19 altering 4th of July plans for many

The Fourth of July, a day that Missourians traditionally gather together to celebrate, is just around the corner. At the same time, the number of COVID-19 cases in our state is rising. Public health experts with the One for All Missouri campaign would like to share the following guidelines for observing the holiday weekend safely:

  • Find creative ways to enjoy the holiday without putting yourself and others at risk.
    • Celebrate at home with the people you live with.
    • Enjoy fireworks shows from your own backyard or your car.
    • Prepare traditional Fourth of July foods at home or pick up takeout from a local restaurant.
  • Attending large events increases your risk of catching and spreading COVID-19. If you attend an event, take action to protect yourself and the people around you.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth face mask.
      • Wearing a face mask significantly reduces the chance of spreading germs and shows that you care about their health and well-being of people around you.
    • Avoid crowded areas at parades and fireworks shows.
      • Watch from at least six feet apart from others or from your car.
    • Plan ahead and pre-pack your summer safety kit.
      • Waiting in concession stand lines and eating in restaurants can increase your exposure.
      • Pack your summer safety kit with hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, tissues and a clean face mask. Don’t forget your usual summer safety items like bug spray, sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • The selfless steps that Missourians are taking to stop the spread are worth celebrating. We wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy Fourth of July!
