-Missouri Center for Public Health Excellence-
As our neighbors across Missouri experience an important moment in the conversation on racial injustice against black Americans during the global pandemic, we believe it is important to provide information that helps support people’s need to protest to undo the systems that allow racism, and the negative health outcomes that result from it.
There are steps that you can take to reduce the risks of catching and spreading COVID-19 when attending a protest:
- Wear a face mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times.
- Practice physical distancing.
- Attend protests with a buddy or small group and stick together to keep your number of contacts low.
- Do your best to maintain space between your buddy group and other groups.
- Use signs instead of chanting or singing.
- COVID-19 spreads through droplets when we breathe, and chanting can spread those droplets further and faster
- Wear eye protection like goggles to prevent injury.
- Use hand sanitizer and/or wear heat resistant gloves.
- Avoid touching your face until you’ve been able to wash your hands.
- Stay hydrated and do not share water bottles.
- Start hydrating before you go out and rehydrate when you get home.
- If you feel sick, protect your fellow protesters and stay home.
