CWD Portion of Firearm Season to Begin November 22nd, But Not for All Counties

People in the Ozarks have been abuzz recently about an “extension” to the Fall Firearms Deer Season, but most don’t realize that this extension applies only to a select few counties in the area, as this is a “CWD” portion of the season.

This portion of the firearms season was put in place by MDC officials in order to better manage growing deer populations within Missouri and to prevent the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.

Conservation agent Matt Franks gave us this summary of the season to prevent any miscommunication between those of us in the Ozarks.

To summarize, the CWD portion of this firearms deer season will begin on November 22nd, continue through to the 26th, and is only open to CWD management counties. The counties that are affected within our complete broadcast radius include Howell, Oregon, Ozark, Ripley, Pulaski and Laclede counties.

Chronic wasting disease, or CWD, is a prion disease that specifically affects deer, reindeer, moose, and elk populations. A prion disease is an infectious, untreatable brain disease that occurs in mammals and is always fatal. One of the most famous prion diseases is mad cow disease.
