The Lincoln School Project invites the public to a special Dedication Ceremony for Reflection Plaza on Saturday, May 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the historic Lincoln School, located at 1400 Pony Thomas Street in West Plains. This new addition marks a profound moment in the region’s cultural and historical recognition.
Reflection Plaza is the first of its kind in Howell County and features two life-sized bronze statues that pay tribute to the students and teachers of the Lincoln School era. The memorial captures the resilience, perseverance, and dignity of those who lived through segregation and played a vital role in shaping the local community.
The ceremony will feature distinguished keynote speaker Dr. Gary Kremer, Executive Director of the Missouri Historical Society and noted historian of Missouri’s African American experience. Acclaimed artist Dr. Bolaji Ogunwo of the University of Lagos, who created the mural By God’s Grace at Lincoln School, will also offer remarks celebrating the power of art and remembrance. Musical inspiration will be provided by Ms. Deborah Jackson of the gospel group W.I.N.G.S. (Women In Need of God Sing), bringing a soulful and moving performance to the day’s events.
The community is encouraged to attend this outdoor event. Limited seating will be available, and guests are welcome to bring their own chairs for comfort.
