WEST PLAINS, Mo. — A social media storm had brewed over two flags and competing ideologies within the student body at West Plains High School.
The issue began when a student at West Plains High School handed out small, hand-held rainbow pride flags earlier this month as a way to show support and solidarity for the school’s population of gay students. The following day, a group of students unveiled a Confederate flag while at lunch.
Social media posts indicate that some of those who unveiled the Confederate flag also said discriminatory words and phrases.
In a statement provided to Ozark Radio News, the West Plains School District says that the safety of students is their top priority and they have begun an investigation. The full statement can be read below:
The West Plains School District has been made aware of recent displaying of flags on the high school campus during school hours. While we are unable to comment specifically on an ongoing investigation, all board policies will be followed. The West Plains School District is committed to addressing the concerns being raised by our students, parents, and community. The safety and education of our students is our utmost concern. We will continue to be proactive in our efforts to keep students safe, while providing them with the highest-quality education. |

A later rumor of violence was found to be unsubstantiated, according to school and police officials.
