West Plains, MO – Imagine being told your whole life by experts that you would never accomplish something. Now, imagine proving them wrong.
That’s exactly what 25-year-old Justin Law has done.
Diagnosed with severe autism as a child, Justin was told by professionals that he would never graduate high school. His mother, Holly Law, refused to accept that fate. Instead, she set out to help her son break every limitation placed upon him.
At just 12 years old, Justin was invited to become a developer for the NAO robot in France—a rare and prestigious opportunity. Homeschooled by his mother, he later took the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) and achieved the top score in Missouri.
Determined to continue his education, Justin enrolled at Missouri State University-West Plains, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Graphics and Programming in 2019. The following year, he obtained an Associate of Arts (AA) in General Studies.
His academic achievements didn’t go unnoticed. He made the Chancellor’s List in both the spring and fall of 2019 and the Dean’s List in the spring of 2020.
Justin’s intelligence and dedication continued to defy expectations, leading the very experts who once doubted him to diagnose him as a savant—someone with exceptional skills in one or more areas, despite an autism diagnosis.
His mother proudly shared, “I have been trying to persuade him to get his bachelor’s in Computer Science! He is an amazing person!”
A Family of Inspiration
Justin isn’t the only inspiration in his family. His 23-year-old sister, Ashlynn Law, has also defied expectations.
Diagnosed with regressive autism, Ashlynn had many hurdles she had to overcome growing up. When speaking with her, she explained what she had experienced through her diagnosis, “I guess in my early years, the most I had trouble with was comprehension. Before around the age of 5 or 6, I didn’t know what my surroundings were. I don’t remember ever registering sound, taste, or touch as much as I could see. But everything felt blank; I don’t remember having thoughts back then. I remember a couple of scenes, and that’s it. Then I just woke up after a vivid dream. It was like something was put back to put me in control, I remember mentally telling my body what to do that morning.” Ashlynn Law was homeschooled then, learning everything she needed to from her mother. She stated that one time, they moved, and she had to relearn the kid basics all over again. She did state that now that she is older, her symptoms are slightly different, ” When I got older, I noticed that I sometimes have sensory issues and had to work with my limits, got used to some stuff, but when stressed out or everything was too much, all my senses would go ultra k HD ×4. Haven’t had a bad one in a while. Used to have it sometimes paired with age regression. Usually, when my age regresses, I end up 3-6 years younger than I actually am, it was an unconscious coping mechanism I somehow had when I got tired or stressed. There are the scary shutdowns in extreme cases; I have a mild form of it where my emotions and reactive thoughts are off I would just try to solve the situation, but sometimes I can’t do anything, so then I need someone else’s brain, it’s like I’m hurting without feeling, and I’m just watching and can think. I noticed that I process things more physically than internally. I had trouble with auditory processing disorder, making it hard to understand people at times. I’ve had things down that most people can memorize.”
Ashlynn pursued a career in agriculture and art. After graduating high school, she earned her AI (Artificial Insemination) certification and now travels to Missouri during the breeding season to work with cattle.
During her off-season, Ashlynn channels her creativity into digital art, working alongside her mother to illustrate coloring books and contribute to a publication company. She recently completed a digital art project for JiuJitsu Outlet, showcasing her growing talent in the field.
Her passion for animals has now led her to return to school to become a veterinary technician—a path driven by her deep love for caring for animals.
Their mother beams with pride, saying, “What is amazing is that both Justin and Ashlynn were diagnosed as pretty severe. Now, they both have driver’s licenses, own their own vehicles, and even own property. I would say they are both a success! I am just a proud mom!”
Overcoming Limitations, Defying Expectations
Justin and Ashlynn’s stories echo those of countless individuals on the autism spectrum—people who are often told what they can’t do, when in reality, they are capable of incredible success if given the right support and belief in themselves.
For those unfamiliar with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), it is a lifelong developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. It exists on a spectrum, meaning that symptoms and abilities vary widely from person to person. Autism has no cure, but early interventions, understanding, and accommodations can help individuals thrive.
According to recent statistics, 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism. Many face challenges, but as a community, there are ways we can help.
– Early Intervention:
Early diagnosis and therapies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can greatly improve outcomes.
– Understanding Communication Differences:
Learn about autism-related communication styles, including challenges with verbal and nonverbal interactions.
– Visual Aids & Structured Routines:
Using visual aids and maintaining consistent routines can help reduce anxiety and improve understanding.
– Respect Individual Needs:
Every person with autism is unique—embracing their strengths and differences is key.
– Fostering Inclusive Environments:
At home, school, and the workplace, accommodations and sensory-friendly settings can make a significant difference.
A Story of Hope & Determination
This story is a powerful reminder that limitations exist only when we accept them.
Justin and Ashlynn Law have proven that a diagnosis does not define one’s future. Through perseverance, passion, and the unwavering support of their mother, they have defied the odds and achieved remarkable success.
Their journey serves as an inspiration to anyone who has ever been told they can’t—proving that with determination and belief in oneself, anything is possible.
