Missouri – The Perseid meteor shower will be at its peak tomorrow night. So look up at the sky to get a fantastic view. The Perseid meteor shower is a weeks-long, fireball-filled event that happens annually.

If you want to catch a glimpse, here are a few things you should know.

  • The shower will be at its peak of activity on the night of Sunday, August 11, and into the morning of Monday, August 12. It is best to wait until the moon has set, giving you the darkest point of the night. If you can, NASA recommends moving away from any bright lights.
  • While Sunday night will be most active the meteor shower will still be seen after this weekend. The annual Perseid shower can last from a couple of days to weeks. In 2023 it lasted from July 14th to September 1st.
  • Fun fact, this meteor shower is one of the few that guarantees the sight of fireballs. A fireball is a very bright meteor, at least as bright as the planets Jupiter or Venus. They can be seen on any night as random meteoroids strike Earth’s upper atmosphere. The fireballs are cast off debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet, an unusually large comet. If you do see a fireball, you can also report it to the American Meteor Society.

Be sure to look up and try to see the shower because NASA considers it “the best meteor shower of the year.”
