Fugitive arrested in Mtn. Home

The Baxter County (Ark.) Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Michael Anthony Behrens of Mountain Home Tuesday morning on several outstanding arrest warrants.

At approximately 7:47 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a homeowner on Old Tracy Ferry Road reporting that she had discovered a person under the house in the crawl space. The suspect fled on foot after being discovered. A description of the suspect and his clothing were given to responding deputies. Deputies found the man in the area of State Highway 5 South. He was identified as Behrens and was found to have multiple outstanding warrants. When searched, a drug pipe was discovered on his person.

Behrens had been identified as a suspect in a forgery case that had been reported to the Sheriff’s Office on January 7.  The victim in that case, from the Midway area, reported that he discovered several checks missing from his business checkbook after being alerted by his bank that someone was attempting to cash one of his checks. The bank refused to cash the check, but obtained video surveillance of the suspect , the vehicle, and other persons inside the vehicle, which was provided to the Sheriff’s Office. After an investigation, a warrant was sought for the arrest of Behrens as being involved in this forgery.

An inquiry into the National Crime Information Center database revealed that Behrens was a fugitive from justice, being wanted by Covington County, Alabama authorities for failing to appear in court to answer theft and drug charges there.

Behrens was transported to the Baxter County Detention Center and booked on charges of:

Forgery in the Second Degree – Felony
Revocation Bench Warrant – Baxter County Felony Warrant
Non-Payment of Fines – Baxter County Misdemeanor Warrant
Fail to Appear – Alabama Felony Warrant
Criminal Trespass on Premises – Misdemeanor
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Misdemeanor

Behrens has a $5,000 bond on the forgery charge, but is being held without bond on the revocation warrant and the Alabama fail to appear warrant.  He will appear before the Circuit Court to answer on March 11th.
