WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Missouri State University-West Plains’ Grizzly Esports program is continuing to build momentum following a historic season that saw the team compete on the national stage.
In a recent interview with Ozark Radio News, Grizzly Esports Head Coach Nick Lawson discussed the program’s growth, the accomplishments of its players and what lies ahead for esports at MSU-West Plains.
The Grizzly Esports program included 27 students during the past academic year, with 17 students actively competing during the fall and spring semesters.
The team capped off the season with national appearances in two titles — EA Sports College Football Club and Mario Kart. The accomplishments marked another significant step forward for a program that has continued to expand its presence at MSU-West Plains.
For Lawson, one of the highlights of the season was seeing students who have been involved with the program since its early days reach the national level before graduating.
The program has also worked to expand its presence beyond the MSU-West Plains campus. Members of the Grizzly Esports program visited several area high schools during the year, giving students an opportunity to learn more about competitive esports and the opportunities available through the college’s program.
Esports has become an established part of the Grizzly athletic program, joining traditional sports and other competitive activities at MSU-West Plains.
The program’s continued growth provides students with another avenue to compete, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and become involved in campus life while pursuing their education.
Lawson said the program’s recent success is providing a strong foundation for its future as Grizzly Esports looks to build on its national appearances and continue attracting students interested in competitive gaming.
