West Plains, MO. – This Friday and Saturday the Avenue Theater is hosting a historic telling of West Plains during the Ozark Heritage Festival. This will give people a place to listen to our history and cool off indoors with a working AC. Lynn Waterhouse and Danette House will both have programs, complete with slideshows to explain some tragedies and some fun facts about West Plain’s past. Denette came in and explained the day’s events, you can listen below.
On Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m., Lynn will be telling her story on the Dance Hall Explosion of 1928 and recounting all the circumstances around the event. At 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Danette will be giving a story about the Ozark Language of the Hills and a story about West Plains.
Come Saturday at 5 p.m., there will be a double feature with both Danette and Lynn, where they will do a retelling of their family histories in the West Plains Civil War. West Plains was burned down twice before any rebuilding happened in 1866. Danette will also be telling some local historic stories like Jim the Wonder Dog and others.
This event is free to the public and there will be popcorn and concessions available for those who come to listen to the historic telling of West Plains.
