With fire departments experiencing an increased volume of calls this time of year, Howell County Rural Fire District #1 is urging residents to exercise caution when conducting controlled burns.
Residents planning to burn in the area are asked to notify the local 911 Business Office at 417-256-0209 before starting a fire. Officials also stress the importance of checking weather conditions, particularly wind speed, humidity levels, and any red flag warnings that may be issued.
In recent weeks, multiple fires have spread rapidly, affecting areas between 5 and 425 acres, resulting in the loss of structures, vehicles, and other property. Fire officials caution that if there is any doubt about whether it is safe to burn, it is best to avoid burning altogether.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent wildfires and protect their communities.
