The Howell County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Unit held a defensive tactics class for team members on December 15, 2024, located at Team Fusion Jiu-Jitsu & MMA in West Plains. SWAT Unit members learned basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling skills to aid them in the performance of their duties.
Studies have shown that law enforcement officers who received Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training are 23% less likely to deploy their taser, 48% less likely to be injured, 53% less likely to injure a suspect and 59% less likely to engage in use of force.
The Howell County Sheriff’s Office plans to maintain this training for all deputies, which will be fully implemented in 2025. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Team Fusion Jiu-Jitsu & MMA – West Plains for allowing the SWAT Unit access for this training.
