Humane Society of Missouri moves to appointment-only visits; waives and discounts adoption fees

Adoption fees for adult dogs, cats and critters being waived; 50 percent off the adoption fee for puppies and kittens

Out of an abundance of caution and concern with the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19, effective immediately the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) is temporarily limiting adoptions to appointment-only and postponing all other scheduled shelter visits including field trips and Shelter Buddies programs. Open house hours at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch are temporarily suspended as well.

“The health and safety of our pets, staff, volunteers and customers are of the utmost importance and we are closely monitoring the current COVID-19 pandemic,” said Kathy Warnick, president, HSMO. “We understand the severity of this new novel coronavirus and are taking every necessary precaution to allow our essential shelter staff to focus efforts where they are needed most – on the animals in our care.”

To ensure as many animals as possible can still find loving homes during this time, the following adoption fee reductions will be offered Wednesday, March 18 through Sunday, March 22:

  • Adoption fee waived for adult dogs, adult cats and critters
  • 50 percent off the adoption fee for puppies and kittens
    • Some exceptions may apply and special does not include Rabies Tag fee
  • 25 percent off the adoption fee for goats

At this moment, the CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19 and there is no evidence that companion animals including pets can spread COVID-19. However, since animals can spread other diseases to people, HSMO recommends always washing your hands after handling animals.

HSMO provides helpful tips here for pet parents, as well as the most recent updates from HSMO, including information on upcoming events.

HSMO is incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of the community as the organization continues to care for the animals in the shelters during this time of uncertainty. You can help support animals by making a donation to HSMO for the care of these furry friends needing rehabilitation or new homes. Contributions can be made here.
