Izard County Sheriff’s Department Warns of Phone Scam

From the Izard County Sheriff’s Office:

The Izard County Sheriff’s Office was contacted this morning regarding a scam phone call.

The complainant stated they received a call from someone claiming to be with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and asking for information. When the complainant refused to provide the requested information, they were told the caller would be contacting the Sheriff’s Office.

A sometime time later, the complainant received another call. This time, the caller ID displayed the Izard County Sheriff’s Office phone number. A man with a foreign accent identified himself as Sheriff Charley Melton. Before any questions were asked, the complainant hung up the phone.

This is a scam.

Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers, making it appear that a call is coming from a legitimate agency or business when it is not.
Remember:
• Never provide personal, banking, or financial information to unsolicited callers.
• Be cautious of anyone demanding immediate action or threatening consequences.
• If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement or a government agency, hang up and contact that agency directly using a verified phone number.

If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
