July 4th is a little over a week away now, and you may have heard the tell-tale signs of Independence Day drawing close as residents set off their own fireworks at all times of the day and night.
Celebrations should be tempered with caution however. The Missouri Department of Public Safety states that more than 77% of fireworks injuries occur during the three-week period of June 21st to July 11th, putting us right in the middle of this time. In addition, dry conditions make private fireworks use a possible catalyst for fires.
If you’re going to be celebrating with your own fireworks, make sure you’re employing safety precautions to prevent any damage to people or property that could occur.
Check your local city ordinances to make sure it is legal to use fireworks within city limits.
Wear eye protection and potentially earplugs when setting off fireworks.
If you have longer hair, make sure it is clean and tied back.
Avoid loose-fitting clothes.
Keep children away from active fireworks.
Make sure you light fireworks on pavement, gravel, or another non-flammable surface.
