Missouri – On March 24, of this year, a Gepp, AR. man was arrested after escaping police during a high-speed chase. He was charged with resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeing- creating a substantial risk of serious injury/death to any person and damage to jail/jail property.
Ozark County Deputy Josh Sherman spotted a vehicle with out-of-date license plates and tried to do a routine traffic stop. After turning on his lights, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Dustin Helton, 36 of Gepp, AR., failed to pull over and accelerated to a high speed. During the high-speed chase of the vehicle, Helton endangered multiple cars, including the officer’s car, while crossing over the center line and trying to strike the officer’s vehicle with his own.
After the driver crossed state lines, Deputy Sherman sought assistance from the Arkansas adjoining county police. Later Lt. Rhodes went to the residence where the vehicle initially left and conducted a search. The search was carried out by Lt. Rhodes, Deputy Josh Sherman, Deputy Moss, and K9 Karo. The vehicle was found on the property along with Dustin Helton and an additional individual, David Blake. Helton claimed to have just bought the car but couldn’t produce a bill of sale, reasonable documentation, or insurance. Both males were taken into custody and transported to Ozark County Sheriff Department jail.
Helton later proceeded to take apart the phone inside the cell and conceal objects inside that could be used in a harmful nature against others or himself, leading to additional charges.
All information was gathered from the probable cause affidavit which can be found on Missouri CaseNet.
