A decision beginning yesterday has effectively barred Missouri inmates from receiving books or other reading material by personal contacts such as family or friends from a bona fide vendor.
This new policy from the Missouri Department of Corrections comes about even after last years’ decision to ban all physical mail in state DOC facilities. The primary reason these decisions have come into place were told to be due to the smuggling of drugs through the Missouri prison system.
Individuals with the Department of Corrections have went on to state that there have been cases where drugs that can be absorbed through the skin in liquid form have been soaked into the pages of books and magazines.
This increase to limitation on publications in prison does not apply to books via digital format, and the DOC states that those in prison still have access to over 200,000 publications in this way.
