MoDOT Removing Adopt A Highway Program

Missouri – MoDOT has recently announced that they are ending the 37-year-old program, Adopt a Highway. They explained that the switch was because the costs and safety risks of this program outweighed any benefits.

MoDot has announced a new program called ‘Keeping Missouri Beautiful’ will be started to replace the Adopt a Highway program. The new program will have volunteer groups perform one-day litter cleanups. The cleanups will be coordinated and scheduled through the MoDOT district offices. Under the new program, the litter pickup is only once a year and no signs will be posted.

The Adopt a Highway signs will slowly be taken down as adopters’ contracts expire. They have announced that all the signs will be given to the individuals who adopted the highways once they are removed from the side of the roadways. There will be no signs left after the year of 2026.
