Mountain Home Resident Arrested for the Murder of an Iowa Man in 2021

Union, IA. – A individual from Mountain Home, AR. has been found guilty and has been sentenced to life in prison after almost two years of the murder of a 74-year-old Iowa man.

On October 12th, 2021, at 5:33am, the Hardin County, Iowa Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence in Union, Iowa for an unresponsive male. They located the body of Steve Reece, 74, and assistance was requested for investigation of the case.

Reece was known for allowing individuals who were down on their luck to stay at his residence, and had extended the same help to Osborn Eugene Gavel, 22 of Mountain Home, AR.

According to a report from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Reece died after being struck by Gavel, with reports on the murder stating the death came with multiple blows from a crowbar.

According to KTLO in Mountain Home, Gavel has also filed notice of appeal with the Iowa Supreme Court, and was free on a $5,000 bond in a drug case when the murder had occurred.
