Last week, the FDA issued emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, which marks a first step toward the vaccine’s distribution in Missouri and nationwide. But with the vaccine still months away for most people, local public health experts with the One for All Missouri campaign are urging Missourians to continue to take steps to stop the spread.
- Once approved, the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed in two main phases.
- During the first phase, distribution will be concentrated on priority groups such as healthcareworkers, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Vaccines could become available to priority groups as early as this month.
- Once these priority groups have received the vaccine and production has ramped up, the vaccine will roll out to the general population.
- Like all vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines are undergoing rigorous testing and approvalsbefore they are rolled out to the general public.
- Multiple agencies and groups are working together to make sure that a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine is available as quickly as possible.
- In addition to Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca have developed vaccines that will be undergoing additional reviews in the coming weeks.
- Missourians must continue taking steps to stop the spread while we wait for the vaccine, especiallyover the holiday and through the winter months.
- Stay home for the holidays. Avoid large indoor gatherings where COVID-19 can easily spread.
- Stay home as much as possible. Wear a face maskover your nose and mouth when you must leave home for work, groceries, etc.
- Use curbside pickup instead of shopping or eating indoors.
- Wash your hands frequently, with soap, for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Stay home if you or anyone in your home is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
